The San Blas Islands

Chichime Cays is as far as we got!!  We arrived on March 12th and left for the ABC's on Saturday, March 15th.

We anchored in beautiful clear water, right off the beach.  These indigenous Indians are the Kunas; they spoke no English but are very friendly and came aboard for lemonade, anything else that was going, and to sell their famous molas.  Molas are panels of embroidery - very colourful, and some are of very fine quality.

The Kunas control the San Blas islands and live on many of the islands, and also on the mainland.  There are about 350 islands in the archipelago.  Some are sandy atolls with just a palm tree!  Navigating through them must be undertaken in daylight; we left before we sampled the delights of eyeballing the reefs!!  There were a couple of thatched huts on the island where we anchored, home to several families of Kunas.  They are very small people, reputedly the last direct descendants of the Caribe indians.

The next report should be from the ABC's!!
