"DINAH"s FOR SALE!

Socorro Island:  "Dinah" is anchored on the right

Friday, December 6th

W
e have reached Isla de Coco ( Cocos Island) our position is 05º33 N, 087º02 W.

First of all thank you all so much for coming by on November 1st on the eve of our departure, it was great to see so many friends and very touching to know so many care!! Your various gifts are greatly appreciated and treasured, as is ALL the help we have received in many forms , over the last weeks.

The following are notes I made during the early part of the trip. There is a big gap during the second half of November, because frankly I wasn’t enjoying the trip at all!! Tired of the salt, tired of the leaking hatches, tired of the rough seas, and tired of being tired!!!

Our departure from the dock took place pretty much as planned soon after 10am I think observed by Ahmed and Tiff, Carey, and Skip, and finally the Spooner Family who nearly missed it, and despite horrific hangovers!! Al came out with "Cheyenne" plus Spooners to accompany us outside the breakwater and I think make sure we actually left and weren’t going to sneak back in!!

Catalina beckoned, it was a beautiful day, and much clearing and cleaning up was required after the somewhat raucous night before! We needed two nights in Emerald Bay to recover, but then set off for San Clemente and more adventures!

The anchorage in the northwest harbour proved to be full of kelp and one very smelly fishing boat, but we found the next small bay had good holding in a sandy bottom, and we anchored for the night. What a night it turned out to be! Probably shouldn’t have been surprised since the island is used exclusively by the military, but we had front row seats to watch planes practicing take offs and landings, and during the night we were woken by flares going off on the nearby beach and the sound of rapid gunfire. What had looked like quarters on the shore turned out to be the stage for mock battles!! Strangely we never saw any troops, but the fireworks were something else!

We were happy to be on our way the next morning, the 5th, to the peace of the ocean and we looked forward to the short 216 mile run to Guadalupe Island.
